The Important Stuff

On my wall, I put up a great poster that has, in large letters, that old USA symbol on it, but it’s not what you think. You may recall my writing about that USA thing some time ago. Do you remember what it stands for?
The large letters don’t stand for the United States of America, not in this case. They stand for Unconditional Self- Acceptance! That big chart on the wall lifts my thinking and my mood and even if it’s just a short glance and a quick thought, it still lift my mind. So, I’ve made a habit of looking at the big sign on my bedroom wall almost every day and thinking about what it means. It’s amazing what those 3-letter do for my mind.
I would strongly suggest you get a sign like that up on your wall too. It could be the USA sign or make you own sign with those letters. Or choose something else that has been helpful for you. Just give yourself a reminder that makes you stop and think and appreciate yourself and what you have. It’s so good for your mind and can help raise your mood.
Here are a few other thoughts that have helped lift my life, my mood, and my mind and that you might want to put up as a reminder in your own life.
- Be grateful.
- Stay physically active.
- Don’t let your social life slip. In fact, try to make it bigger and better. Be an instigator of your social life by calling and inviting friends to do something with you and have them invite their friends.
- Think about how you can motivate your family and friends to get out and join you for breakfast lunch, and dinner. Doing this not only raises your mood but the mood of the people who come along.
- Stay healthy and eat smart.
- Do what works for you. It might be reading certain books or writing your own book, even if you are not planning to have it published. Such goals can give you a huge boost of confidence and can lift your mood.
- Travel and experience new places and people. Wow, I sure loved my around the world trip with my wife, meeting all those wonderful and interesting people, some who were very famous and successful people.
- Teach your kids and friends what works for you to lift your mind and your life and explain how it can help them too.
- Be sure to live in and appreciate the great right now moments!
That’s just a short beginning list. I could add many more items to my list but I don’t want to bore you or take any more of your time. However, I bet you can add a ton to the list as well. And you should! They might all be things you are already very aware of but we all need reminders to keep focused on all the great important stuff.
The Power of Writing it Down

I’ve written a lot about my research on the benefits of goal setting and how very important it is, even critical, to do whatever you want to do with your life. Goal setting can have a huge effect on just about every part of your world, whether it’s about your job, your health, lifting your mood, pushing out any depression you have, or what you want for the future.
It has been proven that you can heal some parts of your body by using your brain to work things out. That’s how powerful our brains are. Combine this power with goal setting and you can change a person’s life while lifting yourself to huge and greater heights.
Goal setting is not super hard—it’s the work you have to do to reach your goal that takes hard work. But, even so, there are parts of goal setting that are easy to overlook.
There is one big thing that doesn’t always get done when setting goals, even though it is quite easy to do. It’s surprising, the number of people that don’t do this, or only do it once in a while. And what is that little extra thing that hugely increases your chance of reaching your goals? It is simply to write down your goals, put a time line on them, and review and visit your written goals regularly.
In my recent January 15th post, I shared a list of affirmations that can help you with your goals setting. They are from Sujatha Lalgudi’s book, Gratitude Journal. It’s a super list that I think can really help many of us struggling humans.
I received the book as a gift and a few days after I received it, I began writing down this list of affirmations from this great little book and then I tried to re-read what I wrote down several times a day.
After doing this for a number of days, I really noticed a change in myself, primarily a very positive change in my thinking. It has worked so well that I want to challenge you to do the same. First write down the list. We take what we write down a lot more seriously than the things we think of in our heads or just read in a book. Then read through this list several times a day and see the difference in can make in you.
Go to this post to get the list I pulled from the book or, even better, go get yourself a copy.
Just the simple act of writing things down can make a difference in how successful you are with what you set out to do. Think of yourself and how important your goals are and see how writing things down can really start changing your life for the better!
Journaling Gratefully

As promised in my last week’s blog, here are some great and smart affirmations from Sujatha Lalgudi’s very clever book called Gratitude Journal. This little book convinced me to write in my journal much, much more and be more aware of how life lifting it is to have a ton of gratitude for so many things in our lives. She encourages all of us to devote “a few minutes a day to develop thankfulness, mindfulness, and positivity.”
I’ve kept a journal for many, many years and I must admit it has been a big help in my life. Not only has it raised my spirits and mood, but it has been a very good motivator to do more and more with my life. I have seen it make a big difference in my relationship with friends and family and even with a few strangers!
The author also encourages readers to “invest 90 days of daily practice to cultivate happiness.” One of the other things she offers is a list of great affirmations to live by or to use to build your own list:
- My potential to succeed is infinite.
- I take pride in the progress I make each day.
- I am proud of myself and all that I have accomplished.
- The world is a better place for me in it.
- I go for goals with passion and pride.
- I am never a burden.
- I am smart.
- I am capable and valuable.
- I am at peace with myself.
- I am unique in my own wonderful way.
- I am focused, persistent, and will never quit.
- I am in charge of my own happiness.
- I have the power to create change.
- I take pride in my achievements.
- I have courage and confidence.
- I don’t need to be perfect.
- I love myself.
- I can make a difference.
- I am in charge of my life.
- I set goals and I reach them.
- I am proud of my own success.
- I am my own superhero.
- I love myself.
- I can do anything
- I can make a difference.
- I am in charge of my life.
- I am in charge of my own individuality.
- I am my own superhero.
- I am free to be myself.
- I trust myself.
- I live each day to the fullest.
These are most of Sujatha’s affirmations and I am sure they would be great and help any of us humans if we could live by this list and or even your own list. In addition to this, she lists many, many pages of items that we should pay attention to. These also are a good source of ideas for making your own list of things to pay more attention to or even to come up with more affirmations.
Sujatha also gives out her email address so that anyone that wants to can comment on her wonderful little book or share their stories. I hope you get this book and that you like her directions and ideas. I sure do!
17 Proven Ways to Boost Your Energy Levels

If you have high energy levels, life is so much more enjoyable and, of course, you can get a ton of stuff done. I’m not just talking about work stuff either. With high energy levels there’s tons of fun things and experiences that you can enjoy. As we age, our energy levels begin to drop, but there are many ways that you can lift or boost your energy and that makes life so much more fun and interesting.
Whether it’s for work or play, family or friends, whether you’re young or old, we could all use a little bit more energy. So here is a list of proven ways to boost your energy levels.
- Set big and exciting goals to put your BIG dreams into action. Be sure to make a list of those big dreams and to put a time frame on those goals.
- Take a good look at your list of goals, either the night before or the morning of, so you wake ready and focused which will give you with lots of energy that day.
- Eat more nutritious foods — lots of fruits and vegetables.
- Drink green tea to help overcome that mid-morning slump.
- Get plenty of exposure to natural light.
- Ease your stress by simplifying your life and mainly, or exclusively, pursue your life’s priority items.
- Heal yourself by being more grateful as well as loving more and letting go of all anger.
- Thinking good thoughts and increasing your positive self-talk can stimulate good neurotransmitters called endorphins.
- Play and exercise daily as that releases more endorphins and dopamine, which will boost your mental and physical energy.
- Keep moving, even if it’s just walking. My fit bit was a fantastic gift. It got me walking at least 5.000 steps a day at first then I began getting 10,000 steps a day and now I consistently get 20,000 steps in a day. That is about 10 miles, but I break up those steps during the day and it doesn’t seem like 10 miles. it always surprises me that doing all that walking gives me even more energy.) My all-time best steps in one day was 40,111. Not bad for 75-year-old dude!
- Get lots of sleep, but not too much, and take a nap when needed.
- Take time for a few minutes of yoga stretching and a bit of meditation for a morning boost.
- Listen to your favorite music. For some people it may be music with a heart pounding beat. To others it may be inspirational symphonic music.
- Socialize with energetic friends and family.
- Go visit new and different places such as new states, cities, or countries, but it also works to just drive or walk through a different neighborhood.
- Drink lots of water. Dehydration drains energy.
- Talk to yourself using positive affirmations. Some of my favorites are:
- I am strong and worthy.
- I’m upbeat and positive
- I have lots of stamina and energy. (I use that one a lot before and during my tennis matches.)
Okay, and here is one last one that may seem strange, but it works. Take huge breaths, exhaling slowly and do a it many times. I do it 100 times without stopping, which takes only about 10 minutes and the reward is a very calm and energy filled mind and body. It also works to help you go to sleep at night which helps with item number 11.
This and all the above will give you lots of energy throughout your day!
Little Notes for Big Changes

I was looking through old books I’ve read that have made a big difference in my life and I came across Susan Jeffers‘ book, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. I have quoted Susan before, since she has so many great ideas, helpful hints, and “techniques for turning fear, indecision, and anger into power, action, and love.” And, yes, that is a direct quote from the cover of her great little book.
As I glanced through the pages and re-read my little notes I took back then, the of advice from the book really struck me again and lifted my thoughts and view of life to a higher level. Below are some of my notes from the margins in the book. When I quickly went over the list, I found it very inspiring and I thought that I really should look at this list often. I also thought that sharing the list here might lift your life too, even if it’s just a little lift.
–Do self-talk and make notes at night to program my mind for the next day.
–In the morning, I’m going to wake up happy, upbeat, positive, and energetic.
–Call friends and others and set up lunch meetings. Start with my circle of close friends.
–Whatever the challenge is, say to myself, “I can do it.”
–Surround myself with strong and positive people.
–Use this great tool: act as if you really count.
–Challenge myself to stay on the path of the higher self.
–What’s the rush? Don’t rush – it’s all happening perfectly.
–Don’t punish myself. Be patient with others and especially myself.
–Turn some of my big challenges over to my subconscious.
–Never forget that it takes a lot of practice and vigilance to direct and control my negative chatterbox.
–Instruct my higher self to work to solve problems and challenges as I sleep.
–Never forget the real key to success is ACTION.
–Keep working on being more proactive. Call friends for lunch, dinner, to play cards, play tennis, play pool, travel, and to interview for one of my future blogs.
–Keep pounding into my brain Susan’s great message: Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway!
And here are 6 more of my notes from the margins of Henriette Anne Klauser’s book Write it Down and Make It Happen.
–Write down a list of my intentions, every day.
–Life is a decision; when you believe in a dream you need to take the risk and just do it.
–Writing things down can make feelings become just speed bumps, not roadblocks.
–Write down you biggest fears and then take action to counteract the fear.
–In addition to writing down your intentions and affirmations, speak them out loud to yourself.
–And lastly, never forget that writing things down activates that reticular activating system in your brain, then your brain works overtime for you.
The Power of Repeated Thoughts

People commonly remark to themselves, or to other people, things like “I’m a real good people person,” or “You know, I’m not good with people. I guess I’m kind of anti-social.” Others say, “Hey, I’m really good at fixing things,” or “I sure am a poor public speaker, but I’m a very good writer.” How about you? What do you tell yourself and others that you are good at and things that you are not so good at?
This self-talk is a very powerful thing and it tends to make you much better at some things, but it also can reinforce negative ideas about your life and habits which can hurt you.
I’ve said for many years that I’m very good with numbers and that I am a good wordsmith but, when it comes to repairing or fixing things, ugh… I’m terrible. And for many years now I’ve said to myself and to others, “I’m really, really not physically flexible.” In fact, I can’t even touch the floor without bending my knees big time. But, a few weeks ago, I started thinking about the huge connection between the brain and the body and how my comments about my lack of flexibility was totally reinforcing that weakness. You see, by telling myself over and over again that I was not at all flexible, my body believed it, which wasn’t hard because I wasn’t doing anything to change it either. So, my body was just following the brain’s instructions.
It does surprise me that I didn’t have this wakeup call years ago. I just accepted having a stiff body as an unchangeable fact and by always saying that I was not flexible, I reinforced what my brain was telling my body.
So, having had my little epiphany, I decided to do something about it. I started a simple daily stretching routine and within just a few days I was delighted to see a slow but consistent improvement in my flexibility. Before my stretching program, if I had dropped something on the floor, I would ask my wonderful wife, Kimberly, it she’d pick it up and she always would. But now she doesn’t have to. Even though I’ve got a long way to go to be super flexible, I can see that it is going to happen, just a little bit at a time.
I’m not saying that we don’t each have some very natural talents and abilities but there is also a very strong connection between the brain and the body that can also affect our abilities. We need to remember that we can direct our thoughts to make changes and improvements in our body and in our life, changes that we may have thought were not possible. The bottom line is that our thoughts can reinforce good stuff in our lives as well as some bad stuff so we should pay attention to which kind of thoughts we keep repeating to ourselves and others.
Think about this and maybe experiment with ways to direct you and your body to change or improve. You might surprise yourself.
Your Own Affirmation List

In last week’s post, I challenged you to come up with some affirmations and positive self-talk. What did you come up with?
Never forget that the human brain can be programmed and you can teach it just about anything you want to–repeat those affirmations to yourself over and over again and your brain will believe it. It can and will improve your life and move you toward any goal you have set for yourself. It’s just like what science has discovered about forcing a smile on your face to make you feel better—the brain doesn’t realize it’s a fake smile and so releases the same feel good chemicals, serotonin and dopamine, as if it were a genuine smile.
If you are still working on coming up with more affirmations and positive self-talk, here are a few of mine that I try to repeat each one ten times every day, many times when I’m taking a shower, bath or sitting in my hot tub.
- I am feeling more upbeat and positive.
- I am happy and healthy.
- I live in the great right now moment.
- I set big goals but am satisfied with baby steps.
- I forgive myself for mistakes I make.
- I love my wife, I love my life.
- I feel calm and collected even in stressful situations.
- I am making a difference in the world for the better.
- I love people and I listen to others.
- I am strong and worthy.
- I eat a healthy diet.
- I love to exercise.
- I appreciate other people.
By the way, before I play a tennis game I do some self-talk as well. For example, I repeat over and over in my head, “I have a very power forehand. I have a very accurate backhand. I am fast and flexible. I have a very accurate and fast serve.†It always seems to help my game. I am convinced this self-talk was a key to helping me win 4 gold medals in singles tennis at the Huntsman World Senior games.
So, go ahead and give it a try in whatever aspect of your life you’d like to improve. I am convinced that if you take time to make up your own list of daily self-talk comments that you will be so glad and satisfied that you did and it will improve your life and those around you.

Serendipitous Affirmations
October 14, 2017 by MarkHaroldsen

While unpacking my jammed-up suitcase in Paris, I was quite surprised to see a very small booklet that had been in my suitcase from a previous trip. The booklet was written by my very good friend and wonderful mentor, Paul J. Meyer, entitled Self-Talk Self-Affirmation Self-Suggestion, co-authored by John P. Gardner. I glanced through the booklet and was a bit surprised by some fantastic quotes and great advice for super success as well as building yourself into exactly what you want to be and do in life.
Then I remembered that Paul Meyer used to teach a great reading lesson. He said, in reading self-help type books or ones that are truly life inspiring and life changing, that “instead of reading hundreds, just read the ones that truly touch you and motivate you to be all that you can be.” He followed that with this key part that I have learned to be so true: “Keep re-reading the best books over and over again since all of us humans tend to forget so much.” And while you’re at it, I would strongly advise you to underline and write in the margins those principals and motivational directions that speak to you and help you become a better you.
So, when that hit me in the face I started reading that great little booklet again, even though I had read it many times before and, yep, I read some things that I had forgot all about or at least I had stopped doing or thinking about as I should have been. Let me give you a few of his affirmations that struck me and hope they strike you and help you as well, even though you may have read or heard them many times before. So here are a few of those lines, starting with Paul Meyer’s definition of affirmations
To quote Meyer, an affirmation is “a declaration or statement about yourself, in the first person (I…) in the present tense (I am) specific, and about what you want to be, to do, to have, etc.” We have learned through scientific study that you can actually trick the brain into believing what you say, especially if you say it over and over again.
French physician Dr. Émile Coué used to tell his patients they would improve faster if they said, over and over again, “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.” By the way, those that followed his instruction found that his method worked in spite of the ridicule of others.
” A man’s life is what his thoughts make of it,” Marcus Aurelius said.
Buddha said, “All that we are is the result of what we have thought.”
I would encourage you to think hard about a self-talk statement that would improve your life and be a great benefit to yourself, your family and the world. If you need some help, just refer back to some of the great self-help books you have read in your life. Or you can search my blog posts for more ideas for affirmations and positive self-talk.
